New Open Access in the Humanities online training course launched!
We are excited to share details of our new online training course on open access publishing, developed by the University of London Press with the School of Advanced Study. The course is free and available now on the School’s RESHAPED platform – a new training and research community space for researchers in the Humanities.
The course offers an introduction to open access publishing for humanities researchers at all career stages, as well as students, librarians and research support staff, and provides the practical information needed to navigate today’s open access landscape. As our Publisher and course author, Emma Gallon, explains, “The number of different routes to open access along with constantly changing open access policies and requirements can be complex and understandably confusing. One of our main aims with this course is to support researchers to consider and approach open access publishing options for their research with more confidence”.
Divided into three interactive, accessible 20–30-minute modules, the course covers what open access is; open access models, funding and licensing; and how to make your publications open access. It features activities and scenarios, knowledge checks, videos with expert speakers (including our own Head of Publishing, Paula Kennedy, and Lucy Barnes, Senior Editor and Outreach Coordinator at Open Book Publishers and the Open Access Books Network) and resource banks packed with useful links for further support and guidance. The pedagogical principles that underpin the modules ensure that the activities are relevant, targeted and engaging, and expert guidance on learning design was provided by one of the School of Advanced Study’s learning technologists, Niilante Ogunsola-Ribeiro.
The course is recommended for anyone looking to:
- Increase their familiarity with today’s open access publishing landscape and context, especially in the humanities.
- Understand the reasons for, and benefits of, open access publishing.
- Apply knowledge of the different types and models of open access for books and journals when considering publication options for their research.
- Comply with funders’, institutions’ and publishers’ open access policies and mandates.
- Anticipate and handle open access challenges.
