Rights and permissions

Non-open access books

To request permission to reuse content from a University of London Press book, please submit an enquiry via the PLSClear website.

Open access books

  • Authors that publish open access books with us retain the copyright over their work.
  • Our open access books are published under a Creative Commons (CC) license, which specifies the ways in which users may reuse content from the book without seeking further permission. The CC license is clearly printed on the copyright page inside the book and on the book’s webpage.
  • Our default licence for our open access books is the CC BY-NC-ND (Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives) license. This allows other people to download the content and share it with others as long as they credit the author, but they can’t change it in any way or use it commercially. If you need to use a different licence for your book, please do let us know – although our default licence is CC BY-NC-ND, we are happy to use other CC licences where relevant.
  • It is important to note that open access books are subject to the usual rules relating to plagiarism and citation using CC licences. These licences help authors to control their own copyright and choose how their work can be used by others. It’s also worth emphasising the authors can upload their open access books to any institutional or subject repository, website or other platforms following publication.
  • For any use of content that is not permitted under an open access book’s CC licence, you can use the PLSClear website website to send us a permission request and we can liaise with the author as copyright holder to handle the request.
  • We are happy to support authors at any stage with guidance needed to respond to rights and permissions enquiries regarding their book.
