Website accessibility

We have taken a number of steps to try to ensure that this website is accessible to as many people as possible and is compliant with accessibility standards and best practices. This statement outlines the steps we have taken so far to launch this site, and also the work that’s still left to do. 

Scope of this statement

This accessibility statement applies only to content hosted on the sub-domain https://uolpress.co.uk/.

The University of London Press website (https://uolpress.co.uk/) is run by University of London Press. It is designed in line with recognised good practice, and training in creating accessible content is provided to all site owners and editors. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website, which means that you should be able to:

  • Change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • Zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • Navigate the website using just a keyboard
  • Skip to main content using tab on your keyboard
  • Navigate the website using speech recognition software
  • Listen to most of the website using assistive technologies – for example text to speech tools and plugins, screen readers, and inbuilt phone and/or tablet functionality

Customisability

The website incorporates Equalweb accessibility tools via a widget which allows users the choice of 32 languages for an optimal and personalised browsing experience. Its accessibility menu also provides features such as screen reader adjustment, keyboard navigation, numeric navigation, blink block, text reader, voice commands, colour adjustments, font sizing and more. 

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability. AbilityNet is a UK charity that exists to change the lives of disabled people by helping them to use digital technology at work, at home or in education. 

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website aren’t currently fully accessible: 

  • Some of our embedded videos do not have captions or audio description. 
  • A number of PDFs do not meet accessibility standards, especially older ones. 
  • Some of our online forms may be difficult to navigate using just a keyboard. 
  • Not all embedded third-party widgets meet accessibility standards, e.g. the books filter and cookies plugin. 
  • Not all images have appropriate alt descriptions. 
  • You may not be able to recognise the role of some elements across the website when using assistive technologies.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility 

The University of London Press is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018. 

Compliance status 

The website has been tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard. It is partially compliant with the WCAG 2.2 AA standard, due to the following non-compliances: 

Non-accessible content

The following content is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
  • Some link text doesn’t make sense when read on its own (for example, ‘click here’), and there are instances where text is difficult to read (WCAG 2.2 AA 2.4.4 Link Purpose – In Context) 
  • Some images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information (WCAG 2.2 AA non-text content) 
  • Some buttons or form fields don’t provide a text alternative (Success criterion 4.1.2) 
  • Some colour contrast meets minimum requirements but is very low contrast (WCAG 2.2 AA 1.4.3 contrast) 
  • In content implemented using iframes we do not always provide a title (WCAG 2.2 AA 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value) 
  • Some hidden elements don’t have focusable content (WCAG 2.2 AA 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value). 
  • The books filter plugin has missing labels (WCAG 2.2 AA 3.3.2 Labels or Instructions) 
  • Pre-recorded videos not published with closed captions (WCAG 2.2 AA 1.2.4 Captions) 
  • Text is clipped when resized on the third-party Twitter plugin (WCAG 2.2 AA 1.4.4 Resize text) 
  • Some controls do not change appearance when they are selected (WCAG 2.2 AA 2.4.7) 

These items are being regularly reviewed and addressed through the use of automated testing tools and website improvements through our deployment processes.

PDFs and other documents 

Some of our PDFs and Word documents are essential to providing our services. For example, many of our books are published as PDFs, and some of our forms are published as Word documents. We are currently working on fixing these essential documents or replacing them with accessible HTML web pages or PDFs. For clarity, some issues may include: 

  • Untagged PDFs (WCAG 2.0 A 1.3.1) 
  • Specify headings for PDFs (WCAG 2.0 A 1.3.1) 
  • Untitled PDFs (WCAG 2.0 A 2.4.2) 
  • PDFs that do not specify a default language (WCAG 2.0 A 3.1.1)

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services, but we are working on improving accessibility across the site as a whole. Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards. 

Reporting accessibility problems with this website 

We’re always looking to improve the accessibility of this website. If you find any problems that aren’t listed on this page or think we’re not meeting accessibility requirements, please contact uolp.accessibility@london.ac.uk. 

When contacting us, please provide: 

  • Page URL (web page address) 
  • Issue encountered (and on what device) 
  • Any particular software or assistive technology being used (for example browser, screen reader) 

We will aim to respond as quickly as possible and, if applicable, add a fix to our website development schedule. 

Enforcement procedure 

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). If you’re not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS). 

How we tested this website 

Our website was tested using Silktide accessibility auditing software as it was built during the first half of 2023. We worked with our developers, Bookswarm, to fix any issues to meet WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility requirements. Anything that has not been met that we are aware of has been listed in the section on non-compliance. We are working with internal and external resources to address any accessibility issues raised by users or these tests as soon as is realistically possible to do so.

We tested https://uolpress.co.uk across the whole site. We also work with some third-party sites to deliver our services. We are not responsible for the accessibility compliance of any partner sites, but the following table provides details of the sites we use and their accessibility statements, if available:

What we’re doing to improve accessibility
