INTERNATIONAL OPEN ACCESS WEEK 2023 – Participating in the wider publishing community

International Open Access week logo

This week, as part of the Open Access Week 2023 ‘Community over Commercialisation’ theme, we’re highlighting some of the organisations and communities the University of London Press is involved with. Today’s focus is our work with the wider publishing community.

We are pleased to collaborate with other university-based publishers in several ways, including the EvenUP collective of 19 UK and Irish university presses committed to working together on improving equity, diversity and inclusivity in our organisations and publishing progammes.

In the last 18 months, a major focus for us has been in helping to develop the new Open Institutional Publishing Association (OIPA), which will be promoting its work via the @oipassoc Twitter/X account throughout the day. OIPA is a new association of university-affiliated publishers working collaboratively to support non-profit open access publishing within the UK.

OIPA is a community of practice, network and advocate for open institutional publishing, featuring a broad range of publishing operations including UCL Press, LSE Press, Scottish Universities Press, White Rose Press, Goldsmiths Press, University of Westminster Press and many more. Information about our current members can be found on OIPA’s new website which launches this week, along with details of the governance, aims and activity of the association. Our Head of Publishing, Paula Kennedy, is on the current OIPA Committee as one of the co-Vice Chairs.

OIPA and Jisc are co-hosting a free webinar this afternoon (‘Support Community-led Open Access Publishing: Help Shape the Future of Scholarly Communications’) – please sign up if you’re interested! Speaker include OIPA members from the University of Westminster Press and the University of Sussex Library, along with Sharla Lair (Lyrasis), Phil Jones (Jisc) and Dr Caroline Edwards (Open Library of the Humanities).

If you or colleagues work for a publishing operation linked to a UK higher education institution and are interested in joining OIPA, please visit the OIPA site or email oipa.contact@gmail.com.
