Exclusive early access

Based on the hugely important research project of the same name, Living with Machines is at the cutting edge of digital history, exploring massive digitised historical collections to show the extraordinary impact of technology on humanity in Britain’s industrial revolution.

Although the publication date for the book is October 2025, we are releasing early drafts of the book chapters for review in three phases in 2024, and the second batch of content is now online and freely available for anyone to read.

Please note this content is currently undergoing open peer review, so has not yet been copyedited.

Now available to read online

If you’d like to know more about Living with Machines, we’ve written previously about how we’re using open peer review for this project, and how it is one of the largest interdisciplinary projects in the humanities.
