In this new series of blog posts, recent UoL Press authors and editors share their own publishing experiences and words of advice and support for new authors, along with their views on open access and what more publishers can do to work with the research community to help build supportive, collaborative and open research and publishing cultures.
In this post, we talk to Diogo de Carvalho Cabral, one of the editors of More-Than-Human Histories of Latin America and the Caribbean. Diogo de Carvalho Cabral is an Assistant Professor in Environmental History and a member of the Trinity Centre for Environmental Humanities (TCEH) at Trinity College Dublin (Ireland).
1. Tell us about your book with UoL Press.
This is an edited collection that gathers contributions from historians and other scholars interested in how the extra-human world – rivers, insects, forests, etc. – helped shape the history of Latin America and the Caribbean, from pre-colonial times to the present. In a way, environmental historians have been doing that for the past 40 years, but this book’s contributors take nonhuman elements even more seriously, exploring them as historical agents in their own right. Rather than seeing history through an ‘environmental deterministic’ lens, this is an effort to complexify historical narratives, making visible the other-than-human vicissitudes and othernesses with which people – both native and adventitious – had to deal in the region over time.
2. What was your experience of publishing with a predominantly open access university press like?
It’s been amazing! Everybody we, the editors, dealt with was highly professional and supportive. We’ve been offered everything we needed to shape up the manuscript, from peer-reviews to copy editing. The deadlines were realistic, and the procedures and policies were clearly communicated to us.
3. What advice do you have for authors looking to publish their first book?
That depends a bit on where the authors come from and where they are based. For academics like me, who were trained in the Global South – and perhaps remain based there – I strongly recommend seeking a predominantly open-access press like University of London Press. It will make their books much more accessible for their native audiences, which I think is critical.
4. Do you think open access has a role to play in creating a positive research culture and, if so, how?
Absolutely. It does have a central role. Having lived all my life in Brazil, I know how hard it is for Global South academics to get access to research – meaning to get past paywalls. It is so incredibly frustrating to know there is a lot of books and articles out there that speak directly to your topic and not be able to read them! In fact, this is one of the causes of the abyss that exists between Global North and Global South humanities researchers in terms of the scope of the questions they ask, as only the former are able to pursue global syntheses, for example.
5. Why did you choose the University of London Press as your publisher?
Because I was lucky enough to have a British Academy-funded postdoc position at the then-Institute of Latin American Studies (now the Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies) back in 2019/20. Thus, I’ve got to meet people involved in the press’s editorial processes such as Professor Linda Newson (my postdoc supervisor) and Dr Ainhoa Montoya, which made a huge difference when thinking about where to send the manuscript.
