Understanding Languages, Cultures and Societies is an open access book series that supports and advances the integrated study of languages, cultures, and societies. Published in association with the ILCS, one of the principal goals of the series is to demonstrate the subject area’s significant contribution to addressing questions of current global concern. Proposals are welcomed for the series that focus on any geographical area or time period and engage with one or more of the following interrelated aims:

1. To explore issues of cultural and/or societal importance;
2. To foster and promote cross-language and cross-cultural study;
3. To chart new directions in the broadly‑defined disciplinary field of Languages, Cultures and Societies.

Emphasising the interconnected nature of linguistic, cultural and social inquiry, the series encourages work that crosses disciplinary boundaries, engages with other areas of the educational and research landscape, and connects with creative practice. Understanding Languages, Cultures and Societies tackles issues that are at the core of the subject area’s knowledge production, serving both as a means for disseminating new, original research and as a catalyst for developing innovative research agendas.
